48 Points Upper Hutt

This page records 48 crossover at the north end of Upper Hutt as it existed in November 2001. What makes the crossover interesting is that the operating mechanism for the siding points is placed some distance from the switches. Rods for the lock and the switches pass under the loop.

Note that the Loop is protected from vhicles on the north backshunt by motor operated 47 traps.

From the left - Main, Loop & Siding. The shunt signal closest to the camera is 39 Shunt and Up Starting From Loop. To the right of the running signal (36 Up Starting From Main) is the 48 points motor. The operating rod for the points at the siding end of 48 cross-over runs towards the camera. The escapement mechanism is between the Main and Loop. Rods for the FPL and the switches pass under the Loop.

47 traps

57 Shunt from North Backshunt is displaying Stop and 47 traps are open as the Daffodil Express sets back into the Loop. Behind the camera are the bankers which will couple to the Daffodil Express and assist it through the Rimutaka tunnel.
